Relocating to a new state is a major life change. The process can be exciting, yet very overwhelming. With so many details and moving parts, we've found that organization and proper planning are the keys to a successful move. Below are some important things to do if you're planning to move here from out of state:
- Create a Budget
The more distance between your old home and new home, the more expensive your move is going to be. Start by making a budget, which can help you get a handle on expenses. You don't want to spend more than you can afford, so it's important to figure this out upfront. Make sure to factor in mover fees, shipping costs, and shipping containers. It can be helpful to add an additional 10 percent to cover any unexpected surprises.
- Connect with a Local REALTOR®
Establishing a good connection with a local real estate agent has major benefits. Nobody knows your future neighborhood better than a REALTOR®, so they can be a great resource for information and recommendations. Our REALTORS® have a large network of contractors, landscapers, financial professionals - anything you need to help make your move as easy as possible.
- Find a Reputable Moving Company
After creating a budget, it's time to find the right moving company. Keep in mind, not all movers do interstate moves. It's important to get quotes from at least three companies to ensure you're getting the best price. If you've never hired a moving company, ask friends and family, for recommendations.
- Update Your Address With the Post Office
About a month before you move, you'll want to be sure to update your address with the USPS so that any bills or important documents are forwarded to your new address. If someone is still living at your new address, you may want to temporarily rent a PO box near your new location.
- Contact Utility Companies
Prior to your move, you'll want to get in touch with current and future utility companies to establish service termination and activation dates. Don't forget to schedule your cable and Internet installation appointment close to your move-in date.
- Decide If You're Going to Ship a Vehicle
If you're moving across the country, you may want to ship your vehicles. The process is similar to choosing a moving company -- establish a budget beforehand and be sure to get quotes from multiple providers. Keep in mind, it typically takes one to two weeks for your vehicle to arrive at your new location.
- Develop a Packing Plan
Putting together a simple packing schedule can keep you organized and even relieve some anxiety before the move. Non-essential items, such as books, movies, and decorative items, should be packed first. Your most essential items should be packed last. A good labeling system will go a long way when it's finally time to unpack.
