Every year, millions of people all throughout the United States participate in a running event for charity. The two most common are marathons – where participants race to a distance of just over 26 miles – and fun runs, which are less formal and can take many different forms. No matter which of these two is most interesting to you, you will find plenty of opportunities to enjoy them around Benton County.
Most events are organized for charity, with fees the racers pay going to a good cause.
Let's look at some of this year's marathons and fun runs around the area:
- Superhero Fun Run and Walk – 100 Southeast Fischer Lane, Corvallis, OR 97333
If you're eager for something fun and exciting to do near Corvallis, you're in luck – the Superhero Fun Run and Walk will be taking place on Sunday, August 20. This first-ever event, a tradition in the making, will take place at the Crystal Lake Sports Fields. As a family-friendly event, participants are encouraged to dress up in their best superhero attire and choose a pace that's comfortable.

With more than 40 years of history behind it, the Fall Festival Run is an event local runners look forward to all year long. The run brings its participants all through the picturesque OSU campus. Organized by a local nonprofit, Heart of the Valley Runners, the proceeds will go to support local running in all its forms. It takes place on September 25, with 5K, 10K, and Kids' Fun Run options to choose from.
- Lebanon Explosion 5K & 1 Mile – 550 Cascade Drive, Lebanon, OR 97355
Lebanon's Seven Oak Middle School track and field facilities will serve as the setting of the Lebanon Explosion 5K and 1 Mile. Sponsored by none other than the Lebanon Explosion Dance Team. Funds collected for the race will go directly to support the Lebanon High School dance team's trip to the Nationals.
- Bush Park Cross Country Run Series – 890 Mission Street Southeast, Salem, OR 97302
Salem homes for sale aren't far from the Bush Park Cross County Run Series, which takes place every Thursday throughout the month of August. Starting out from Bush's Pasture Park, one of Salem's top public parks and a botanical garden, racers will have the option of participating in a 5K, a 3K, or a kid-friendly fun run on each date. It is sure to be fun for everyone.
- Albany Beer "Run" – 140 Northeast Hill Street, Albany, OR 97321
Billed as "a run for the rest of us" and dedicated to "the below average athlete," attendees of this Albany event will be running about 0.3K – a fraction of the average race. Unlike most of the other events around the area, dogs are welcome at the Albany Beer "Run" as long as they are friendly and safely leashed at all times.
